about the “Seahorse” swimming badge
A swimming badge is something very special. We congratulate all children
who have gained their badge and share their delight in their achievement.
A Seahorse certificate is a great motivator on the path to being a safe
swimmer.
Please be aware that fulfilling the Seahorse requirements does not yet
mean that your child can swim safely. This notice is also printed on the back
of the Seahorse certificate. The badge on their trunks / swimsuit does not
necessarily mean that the child will behave correctly and be able to draw on
their skills in a real everyday or dangerous situation. Exams are generally
held at the swimming pool under optimal conditions, with clear, calm water.
On top of the element of surprise, in a dangerous situation the water is not
usually as calm as it is during the exam at the familiar pool. The child may
even be wearing long clothing and shoes when they fall into the water.
Regular training is needed to ensure that a child can swim a distance of 25
metres after accidentally falling from a pier or boat.
More and more swim schools are offering advanced courses in becoming a
safe swimmer. In our Dolphin Course here at the Creative Swim School, we
offer playful safety training that builds on the skills learned for the badge
and gives children a lasting ability to cope with practical situations. Here,
the training particularly focuses on gaining an overview, avoidance, falling
into water, swimming in waves and swimming in long clothing.
